Spooky Spider Hands With The Rosedale School

Week Seven

This project is from the week of Halloween. In honor of the holiday the students made mixed media spider collages. This activity employed several of the mediums and techniques the artists had already familiarized themselves with in previous weeks.

The students first used white oil pastels to draw spiderwebs on their pieces of heavier medium paper. Next they used watercolor to paint the entire page, revealing their unique and individual webs like magic.

Finally the students (with the assistance of the instructors) traced both of their hands (excluding the thumb) on black construction paper. They cut out the hands and glued them together. The students picked a spot on the web for their spiders to sit. This activity was fun and exercised the artists’ abilities to walk through a multi-step process.
